OFF THE TRAC

Professional sports journalist Matt Weaver of Short Track Scene told our SpeedU students in a recent visit “It used to matter most what happens between the green flag and the checkered one. Now it matters far more what happens between the checkered flag and the next green one”.

One of the biggest mistakes most youth racing families are making is in the balance of their investment in performance verses personal development. We’re spending the vast majority of our resources on the quality of their performance, while the very partners that we are trying to engage are more inclined to invest their resources based on the quality of the PERSON! That’s a divide that has to be addressed for success in chasing the racing dream!

DOES THIS STORY SOUND FAMILIAR?

Caleb is in 10th grade. He is a professional race car driver. He participates in over 100 races each year all over the U.S. He has national sponsors, does TV interviews and is on track to become a NASCAR driver in the next few years. Caleb tried to be a traditional student but was labeled a “truant student” because of his many absences due to his race schedule. He tried “homeschooling” but needed more structure and accountability. Being in high school, Caleb also wants to have the same social school experiences that all his friend have in traditional schools, like dances, field trips and social activities.
